The Basic Functions Of A Hard Drive
In recent times, our lives have been enriched by the introduction of the computer which is used for several purposes. It is used by a lot of people to communicate with friends and loved ones around the world, to do research, shopping, create, send and store various documents and to pay bills. For all of this to take place, there are several parts which are used to assemble the computer. Among these parts is the hard drive.
This is a type of device which is used to store large amounts of digital information on a computer. It is an essential part of the computer and in recent times, these devices have become faster, more reliable and have a larger storage capacity than when they were first discovered. They all have the same basic structure but they perform differently based on the quality of the parts used. These basic parts are the platter, the spindle and spindle motor, the read or write heads and the head actuator.
There is a round disk which magnetically stores the electronic data which a computer system will recover and utilize and this is called a platter. It is constructed using aluminum or glass and ceramic substrate with a magnetic coating. Each drive usually has several platters and each platter has two sides that can be used. The platters are separated by disk spacers and each one is attached to a spindle which rotates.
The spindle motor and the spindle allow the platters to turn together so that the drive can work. This functions in the same way as the needle on a record player. They turn at a set speed continually and this is known as the spindle speed. This speed is used to determine the revolutions per minute which is one of the conditions that people use to select a new drive.
The task of the read and write heads is to read and write data onto and off of the platters. Tiny magnetized bands called bits are converted into magnetic pulses and stored on the platters. When it is time for the data to be retrieved, the process is reversed. In the majority of cases, these heads are found on both sides of each platter.
The device that causes the actuator arms to move is known as the head actuator. The read or write heads are placed in the appropriate position when the arms slide over the platters to read or write the data which is needed. One head actuator connects each one of the heads.
There is a chamber in which all of these fundamental parts are enclosed and this is called the head disk assembly. On the outside of this same chamber is a logic board which is responsible for controlling the actions of the parts inside and also the way in which data is moved into and out of the drive.
A hard drive is man-made and as a result there is the likelihood that some type of malfunction might occur. This is why users are encouraged to make a copy of their data on a separate device or on a disc to keep in a safe place.
