Shelving for your garage or basement…. a step to getting organized

Is your basement or garage a mess? Are the things that you placed in the garage just piling up and most of the time you just can’t find what you wanted to look for?

Well it is time to think of installing shelves in your garage or basement. Shelves will help you organize your garage or basement and at the same time utilize the space to allow you to place more stuff. A friend of mine who had shelving installed in his basement was able to have custom made shelves that were 2 feet deep whereas most ready-made shelves are made 18 inches deep. Pressure treated wood was used for the bottom shelves in case there were water issues while top shelves were kept open for easier access and for larger items. You can basically have shelves installed any way you’d like them. Shelving construction can be done by either you or your handyman.

To help you do that, here are some basic steps you should follow in your shelving construction:

- Check if you have your basic tools and materials on hand.

- Plan what type of shelving you want beforehand and have your measurements ready before you purchase your materials.

- It is a good idea to make use of the materials at a box store or a local building supply store. Home depot has been a good supplier for me.

- Always be ready and purchase pressure treated wood for the bottom layer of your shelves as this will help you in the future if water problems are encountered.

- Materials and tools should be set up in the place where the shelves will be installed.

- Measure, cut and assemble shelving in place.

- The top shelves should be left open for easy access.
