Wall Mounting Your TV
The use of TV’s in the home has moved small displays in corners to a major centrepieces capable of displaying and playing a range of media formats including TV, DVD, video, music, slide shows, PC connectivity, web browsing, document writing.
As the TVs become more capable, consumers have become more demanding on their positioning and flexibility, and wall mounts have becoming increasingly popular.
TV wall mounts allow a wide range of movement around a fixed wall point. From pivoting left and right, to raising and lowering, tilting and even rotating, TV wall mounts offer a massive range of movement for a minimal impact.
A TV wall mount should be relatively easy to install, even for someone with a small amount of DIY experience – but if you have any doubts, find a friend to help or employ a professional.
The most important part of installing a TV wall mount is identifying where you will be installing it. Be confident that the mounting point you have chosen will be suitable for your TV needs. If you have any doubts, try cutting out a piece of cardboard the same size of the TV and moving it around the room until you find the perfect position – it really helps!
Different wall mounts may require different tools, but some basic tools you’ll need are a spirit level, drill, drill bits, a spanner, wall plugs (if not supplied with the wall mount) and screwdrivers. Safety is always an important factor when doing any piece of DIY, so make sure you are properly prepared before starting any work.
Before you begin to drill you will need to identify what, if anything, is behind the wall at the drill point. A stud detector should help you to be able to identify where the wall studs are and help you avoid electrical wires or water pipes. When you have found the studs and identified where you will be drilling, use the wall mount to mark the positions of your drill holes. Unless you want a lopsided TV, make sure your wall mount is level when you mark them.
Place the wall mount on the wall and mark out the drill holes. Don’t forget to use a spirit level to make sure it’s perfectly horizontal. Now drill the holes and add in the wall plugs. Place the wall mount on the wall and screw in the screws. Screw them in slowly; making sure the mount remains level while you tighten them.
Once the wall mount is screwed to the wall it’s time to add the tv. Make sure you have an assistant on hand to take the weight of the TV while you screw it onto the mount. Always think safety first – do not attempt to lift a heavy TV and secure it to a wall mount by yourself. If you’re assistant needs help holding the tv, finding another person or prop the TV up securely using a table / pillar or some sort.
Once the television is mounted, sit at your viewing point and have your assistant help adjust the television to the correct viewing angle. Adjust the pivot, tilt, height and rotation to find the perfect viewing angle. Now sit back and enjoy your newly wall mounted television!
