Key Pieces Of Airtight Food Storage Container
The unexpected happens so often, you can almost expect it. At this point in time, there are hurricanes, earthquakes and more going on all around the world and it’s worth being prepared. Get at least one airtight food storage container that you can use for supplies in case of emergency and you’ll feel a lot more prepared.
Why should you buy airtight? Because when food is left for a long period of time in storage, bugs, mice and mold invariably make their way into it. Even if you’ve never seen mice in your home, bugs show up all the time and you might not ever see them.
So, if you’re going to store food for an emergency situation, what should you be stocking up on and how much? There are a number of guides around, but as a general rule, you should have no less than three days worth of food per family member. Many people store much more than that and turn to their food storage when they have issues with finances, but 3 days is the minimum.
Skip anything that might go bad within a few months. You want long lasting foods, preferably those that will last for at least a year or more. Make sure you read expiration dates before you start stocking up.
Food that is in cans will last for a very long time. You’ll also have food that is ready to eat when you store tins. Just open them up and eat, if need be. There may be circumstances where you have no access to extra water for cooking or even fire, but if that happens, you can still eat just fine.
Look for a nice variety of tins, so you can have something different each day and also to balance out the nutrition. Proteins in the form of canned meat or fish, vegetables, fruits and beans are all good options. You will need the extra nutrition.
In the storage container, it’s also a good plan to have more perishable foods like grains, rice, oatmeal and the like. You may also want to keep candy bars, dried fruits and other similar foods on hand, carefully packaged to last. These will give you an extra energy burst. Drink powders are also good.
Since you’ll likely be treating drinking water, it can end up with an unpleasant taste that kids might refuse to drink. With that in mind, drink powders are perfect. Buy individual packets or a tin of powder. It should keep for a while and has enough sugar to make it an extra boost of energy for kids and adults alike.
Get your airtight food storage container first, so you can make sure that everything is nice and fresh. You’ll be able to replace the food every 6-12 months and use up the food that is about to expire. You should be prepared for anything . . . It doesn’t take a lot to be ready for an emergency. You can easily stock up a few days worth of food, plus some other basic items and you’ll be good to go.
