If you do not have a coat closet, and you live in a region where there are real winters, you probably need one. And there are many other additional closets you can probably use, so you need to know how to make money building closets.

First you must have the expertise, of course. If you are a carpenter by trade, a closet will probably be easy for you to build. But if you are good at wood working, but are not too sure how to build different types of closets, you may want to get a book about it, or take a course online.

Advertising would be the next thing to do. You do not need to spend a lot of money on ads, unless you feel that the neighborhood is worth it and will respond accordingly.

But if you are not sure of what type of neighbors you have, and you want to cover a broader area, try a free local Internet ad. If you include the areas in which you are willing to travel to work, this may open up a whole territory for you.

Your estimate for the work should be free. Most people do not like handing out money for a piece of paper. You should visit the home, spend some time measuring, taking pictures, or whatever you can do to help you decide on your price for the work. Put together a fair estimate for the customer, but make sure it will make doing the job worthwhile for you.

Do not include a lot of information on your estimate. You do not want to give the customer a road map of what you are going to do just so that she can take it to another carpenter. This happens all the time. Just tell her what you intend to do, estimate the cost as closely as you can get, and leave it at that. The measurements and details should not be included, so that the next estimate needs to start from scratch, as well.

Since building materials and wood are expensive, you will need to research where you can get the least expensive materials to do the job correctly. Include those costs in the estimate as precisely as you can, without giving away what type of wood and how much is needed, and so on. Your labor will also need to be included, and you should include time on the job and travel time, as well. You may negotiate to have half of the estimate paid up front, before you begin the job. In this case you will need a simple written contract, signed by both of you.

Let your customer will know an exact date by which you will have the closet completed. When you stick to this date, your referrals will come in from word of mouth, and you will know how to make money building closets in other homes.
