What You Need To Know About USB Memory Sticks
USB memory sticks have become something that most people will have. There are many reasons why these little devices have become so popular. When considering them it is best to look at what they do and how they do it.
What USB memory sticks are exactly would be the first place to start. Memory sticks are in fact small portable electronic storage devices. These devices are small and will not be any bigger than a keyfob or a pen. Flash memory is what is used to store the data put onto them.
When a USB memory stick is made there are certain components that are needed. A USB mass storage controller, a male type A USB connector, a NAND flash memory chip and a Crystal oscillator are the four essential parts of a memory stick. Additional components would be connector covers, LED’s, unpopulated space, transport aids, write-protection switches, memory card slots, jumpers and test pins.
Having a memory stick will have a number of advantages compared to other forms of storage. Dust and scratches can affect and render devices useless. Fortunately the memory stick does not suffer from this. Memory sticks have a large gig allowance and this allows them to store more data than things like CD’s. They also do not use much power and are made small and light so they can be easily transported.
It is best to not only look at the advantages of a product but also the disadvantages and USB memory sticks do have some. Write-protection mechanisms are one of the things that the majority of memory sticks do not have. Of course some will have a small switch on them that will lock it so the data cannot be tampered with. While their size may be a good thing it also makes them very easy to misplace.
There are certain things that should be looked at when we compare a memory stick to other kinds of small data storage devices. Three of the most common small devices would be a CD, memory cards, and external hard drives. CD’s often will not have the same capacity as a memory stick and can be damaged by scratches. Having an external card reader will be a necessity if when using a memory card as most computers do not have the facility to read them. An external hard drive will be a bit bigger than a memory stick but can have more space and be cheaper per gig in comparison.
The use of USB memory sticks are part of our lives. It is because of this that we should be aware of what they do and how they do it.
