The Different Kinds Of Flash Drives
Flash drives actually come in two different types. The most common is the USB flash drive while the other is called a solid state drive. These flash drives are rather different and will be used at different times for different things.
So what types of flash drives are there and how are they different? As we have said the USB drive and the solid state drive are the types. The smaller and more portable is the USB drive. Even though it is bigger the solid state drive will have the ability to be used as a hard drive instead of the hard disk drive which is something the USB cannot do.
A USB flash drive can be attached to a computer through the USB port that new computers will have. Older computer will not have this port. As the USB drive is very small it is possible to carry them around in a pocket making them very popular. They are not only small but can also be made in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some of them will be novelty items while others can be found in pens.
Owning and using a USB flash drive will have many disadvantages and advantages. Some of the advantages will be the fact that dust and scratches will not affect their performance; it is easy to move them as they are small and they will offer higher capacity than other small devices. Some of the disadvantages will be that they are so small that they can get lost easily, they may cost more than things such as external hard drives and they do not have write-protection mechanisms.
The other flash drive is the solid state drive which is an information storage device. This drive is not as small as the USB drive. Of course it is possible for a disk hard drive to be replaced with this type of drive. You do not have to worry about having an external power source for them and this means that they will retain all information even if there is a power outage.
Using a solid state drive instead of a hard drive has many different advantages. Some of the advantages would be that they have no moving parts so there is no noise and lower risk of mechanical failure, a faster start up time and the durability makes it good for laptops. A few of the disadvantages are a slower writing time than a disk hard drive, a higher price than other hard drives, less space and a more limited life span.
The USB drive and the solid state drive are the two types of flash drives that are available to us. One is small and popular while the other can be used as a normal hard drive is.
